Bodybuilding experts have long known the benefits of a daily cup, but scientists may have discovered another reason to love coffee.

Researchers at the University of Nottingham in England recently discovered that coffee activates the body’s fat-fighting mechanism, known as ”  brown fat “. That means it could keep you leaner and avoid diabetes.

”  The potential implications of our results are quite significant because obesity is a major health problem for society and we also have a growing epidemic of diabetes and brown fat could potentially be part of the solution to address it “, a said Professor Michael Symonds, of the University of Nottingham School of Medicine, in a statement on the School’s website.

Mr. Symonds adds that it is not known whether it is caffeine or something else in coffee that activates brown fat. ”  We are currently studying the possibility of using caffeine supplements to check if the effect is similar, ” he said in his statement.

There are two types of fat in humans: brown and white. Brown fat, or brown adipose tissue, is responsible for producing body heat and burning calories. 
White fat is the result of too much calorie storage (in other words, the fat you want to get rid of).

For the study, nine human subjects were examined by thermal imaging before any exercise or previous consumption of caffeine. They then drank a very small cup of coffee (a 65-milligram package of instant coffee dissolved in 200 ml of water, to be exact), and underwent new thermal imaging.

The researchers found that the coffee produced warmer brown fat (mainly found in the neck), thus speeding up the number of calories, sugar and fat burned. The results were found in all subjects, who were described as “healthy”, aged 27 years (four men and five women).

As we mentioned, it’s not surprising to hear that drinking coffee can help you lose weight. But the Nottingham researchers said the study was groundbreaking because it was the first time anyone could find a way to stimulate brown fat in humans.
